Are there any Names and attributes of Allah?

Allah Almighty has referred to Himself with specified Names and attributes in the Qur’an which are befitting for Him. These names and attributes give us insight about our Lord to some extent so that we can familiarize with Allah Who no one has ever seen. All of Allah’s names are profound and beautiful. Allah says in the Qur’an.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Surah Hashr, chapter 59. Verse 24.

As Muslims, it is an integral part of our faith to believe in Allah’s names and attributes that He has proclaimed for Himself, proven from the Qur’an and the teachings of our prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), without associating them to any of His creation. His names and attributes are of utmost perfection, without any deficiency.

There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. Surah Shura, chapter 42, verse 11.

Allah’s names are both proper nouns and attributes. E.g., The-All Knowing, The-All Hearing, The Merciful, The Beneficent, etc. All the names of Allah are attributes but not all of His attributes are names. Here are some of the verses which mention Allah’s names and attributes:

  •  “Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” Surah Baqarah, chapter 2, verse 182,
  •  “So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth.” Surah Taha, chapter 20, verse, 114.
  • He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. Surah Hashr, chapter 59, verse 23.

All praise belongs to Allah our Lord, as mentioned in the Qur’an:

“And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” Surah Luqman, chapter 31, verse, 27.

In the end, we establish that Allah does indeed have names and attributes befitting His majesty that help us know about Him and get closer to Him and that these names and attributes are authenticated through the Qur’an and prophetic traditions. Allah knows best. May Allah guide us.
